Entrepreneur. Investor. Mentor. Friend.
Sands Capital mourns the loss of Executive Managing Partner Ian Ratcliffe, whose leadership, generosity, and unwavering belief in people helped shape our firm and the many lives he touched.
Ian joined Sands Capital in 2016 following a remarkable career as a life sciences entrepreneur, founder, and chief executive. Deeply passionate about advancing scientific innovations that reach patients and save lives, he played an instrumental role in building the firm’s private life sciences investing capabilities, including the Life Sciences Pulse strategy and our broader venture investing efforts. In 2021, he joined our firm’s Executive Management Team, where he brought the same candor, optimism, and thoughtful leadership that defined every role he held.
“Ian believed the greatest investment any organization can make is in its people. He lived that belief every day. He challenged us to think more clearly, encouraged us to aim higher, and made everyone around him better. His impact on Sands Capital extends far beyond the businesses he helped build. It lives on in the people he mentored and the culture he helped strengthen.”
Frank M. Sands, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer
While Ian was widely respected throughout the life sciences community, those who knew him best understood that his greatest gift was investing in people. He believed great investment organizations are built by developing great investors. Whether mentoring a young colleague, advising a founder, or working through a complex investment decision, Ian combined rigorous inquiry with optimism. He challenged people to think more clearly, asked hard questions with humility, and somehow made even the most difficult discussions enjoyable.
“Ian brought a rare combination of operating experience, scientific curiosity, and investment discipline to every opportunity we evaluated together. He had an extraordinary ability to understand both the science and the people behind a business, and he never lost sight of what ultimately mattered—helping innovative companies reach the patients who needed them. Working alongside Ian made all of us better investors.”
Mike Graninger, Managing Partner, Global Venture
Outside the firm, Ian was known for his extraordinary capacity for friendship. After arriving from the United Kingdom to attend the University of Virginia Darden School of Business in 1992, he found what became his American family. He remained deeply connected to his classmates and the Darden community throughout his life, generously investing his time, encouragement, and friendship to those around him.
“Ian moved effortlessly between science, business, and investing. He understood founders because he had been one. He understood science because he was endlessly curious. Most importantly, he understood people. Together we built Pulse around the belief that exceptional companies are built by exceptional people. Ian embodied that philosophy every day. His legacy will continue through the team he helped build and the countless people he inspired.”
Stephen Zachary, Managing Partner, Life Sciences Pulse
Our thoughts are with Ian’s wife, Liz, daughters Emma and Kate, and the many friends, colleagues, founders, and partners who had the privilege of knowing him.
